Club Newsletter 14/2/2022

Hi Maccabi Athletic club members and friends,
Did you see that! HUGE congratulations to Jemima Montag who on the weekend, in Adelaide, won the Oceania and Australian 20K race walk championship AND set a new Australian record of 1 hour 27 min 27 sec breaking the old Australian record set back in 2002. This is the third year in a row Jemima has won this event – and has now qualified for the World Athletic Championships to be held in Oregon USA, in July 2022.

The last weekend of AVSL (round 10) was held at Lakeside. Maccabi was represented by 11 determined athletes as we instigated our Powerplay.

Without a doubt the highlight was the men’s under 18 4x100m relay of Ben Blecher, Gidi Datt, Adam Benson and female junior sprinter Danielle Axarlis! – the team blitzed the field, beating open men’s teams and winning the race! Just watch them run!

Israeli athletes Shanie Landen (400m 56.98sec) and Ortal Raikhlin (3000m 10.45.1) won huge points for the club as did Skye Edelstein (U.16 400m 61.66sec) and Ben Blecher (u.14 400m 55.85 sec, 100m 12.52sec and triple jump 10.01m).

Ori Drabkin set yet another 100m pb of 14.20sec, whilst Asher Grodski ran strongly in both the 1500m and the 3000m!

Adam Benson (100m and triple jump), Gidi Datt (100m), Danielle Axarlis (100m), Josh Levy (100m and javelin) and Myer Vorchheimer (100m and triple jump) were explosive!

Maccabi has finished 3rd on the Division 5 ladder and will compete in the finals (playoffs) on the 5th March. Mazeltov team Maccabi!
Our intra-club competition is also almost finished with only the playoffs left. Well done Ben Blecher on an outstanding season, topping both competitions and also coming 14th in the overall AVSL Most Valuable Athlete ranking
The State Track and Field championships commence this weekend. Maccabi will have 10 athletes competing at Lakeside (Ben, Josh, Danielle, Adam, Asher, Emma de Jong, Skye, Jayden Donner, Jordan Levy and Ian Revale.) whilst Ori will be competing in the NSW championships.

We wish all our athletes – and those Maccabiah selected athletes in Sydney – all the best in competition.

Training this week:

Thursday 17th February 6.00pm at Caulfield Park
